Inbound Recruiter (Volunteer)
Note: This is a remote, part-time volunteer position. Please do not apply if you are only seeking paid employment.
Help us find the right people by managing and advancing our applicant pipeline.
We’re seeking an Inbound Recruiter to help screen, process, and engage candidates who apply to WhoWhatWhy through platforms like LinkedIn, VolunteerMatch, and Indeed. If you’re detail-oriented, responsive, and passionate about connecting people with meaningful opportunities, this role is for you.
Who We Are
WhoWhatWhy is a nonprofit investigative news organization producing deep-dive journalism on the most pressing issues of our time. We’re powered by skilled volunteers and a small core staff — from students to seasoned pros — who believe in ethical, independent journalism free from corporate or political influence.
About the Role
As an Inbound Recruiter, you’ll:
- Monitor and process incoming applications from platforms like JazzHR, VolunteerMatch, and others
- Manually upload candidate info from platforms that don’t sync automatically with our ATS
- Handle resumes and inquiries sent via the HR inbox
- Conduct initial screenings and coordinate interviews with applicants
- Keep detailed candidate records updated in JazzHR
- Communicate next steps and feedback to applicants in a timely and professional manner
- Collaborate with the Talent Acquisition team to improve candidate flow and experience
What We’re Looking For
- Some experience in recruiting, HR, or volunteer coordination
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (JazzHR is a plus)
- Comfort juggling multiple candidates and priorities in a remote setting
- A proactive, detail-minded, and collaborative approach
- Passion for mission-driven work and connecting people to purpose
What You’ll Gain
- Hands-on experience with real recruiting tools and workflows
- Insight into nonprofit talent strategy and pipeline management
- A chance to shape the volunteer experience from the very first touchpoint
- Flexible, remote schedule (aside from department check-ins)
Commitment
We ask for a commitment of 5–7 hours per week and a minimum of 6 months. This includes time for reviewing applications, conducting screens, and team coordination.
How to Apply
Please send:
- Your resume
- A short, customized cover letter explaining what draws you to this role
To confirm that you’ve read this description, include the phrase “Committed to the Mission” and the result of 12 ÷ 3 somewhere in your letter.
If there’s no place to attach a cover letter, please email it to [email protected]. Check your spam folder for responses — they sometimes land there.
Reminder
We value authenticity. Please make sure your application reflects your own voice and intent — we’re looking for connection, not just credentials.
