Would you find it exciting to work with smart and talented individuals committed to producing great journalism in the public interest? Can you commit 10 hours a week to our mission, working remotely on your own schedule with our far-flung, diverse team? 

WhoWhatWhy is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Program Co-Manager to develop and execute on the vision for our Mentor Apprentice Program. This program recruits experienced journalists to mentor early career and aspiring journalists in the craft of journalism. The Program Co-Manager will establish a positive environment, set expectations and ensure that the program meets the expectations of both mentor and apprentice participants. Our Mentor Apprentice program has tremendous potential for scale. The Program Co-Manager will collaborate with others at WhoWhatWhy.org to draft and implement program policies and procedures to achieve that scale and ensure a consistent high quality experience for all participants.

We are a nonprofit. We are not funded by a zillionaire. We do not accept corporate ads. As such, we seek skilled volunteers to fill out our growing organizational infrastructure. 

Age does not matter. We have among us young students, vibrant retirees, and everything in between, from all walks of life.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate vision and strategy for the program to internal and external stakeholders
  • Establish recruiting practices for mentors and apprentices
  • Develop an apprenticeship model that is designed to scale as the program grows
  • Develop and document program processes and gather feedback on them in order to improve them over time
  • Monitor the operation of the program, recommending changes to program practices to improve the experience and outcomes

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience in program design, planning, and administration
  • Effective communication skills
  • Experience in establishing processes and documentation to ensure continuity of operations and to drive the program toward excellence.
  • Experience in two or more of the following areas: recruiting subject matter experts or mentors, increasing awareness of a volunteer program, managing program growth, workforce development, developing apprenticeship models, managing volunteers with advanced skills, team-based approaches to project implementation

Expectations 

You will be expected to attend your department’s recurring meetings. Beyond this, you will work on your own schedule. We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months for at least 10 hours a week. Because our team is spread throughout the world, we rely on a combination of Slack, email, and conference calls, and expect everyone to be responsive in a timely manner.
