Volunteer Data Analyst/Researcher

The investigative reporting website WhoWhatWhy is seeking Data Analysts/Researchers to join its newly-formed Data Journalism department to work with reporters to generate and produce data-driven articles and studies that reveal important insights and developments on topical social, economic, cultural and political issues.


The volunteer Data Analysts/Researchers will work independently as well as with Editorial to create insightful stories and visuals for our readers. Specific duties include:

  • Data mining, acquisition and management:  explore and identify data sets from a variety of different resources (“data wrangling”) and be able to “munge” data into desired data frames and models for the purpose of data exploration, statistical modeling and data visualization.
  • Statistical modeling: design and build models to show interesting and/or hidden relationships in data sets to reveal new or interesting phenomena
  • Data visualization:  interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques and produce compelling graphics and charts
  • Process design and management: Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality


Skills Sets:

  • At least 3 years’ experience creating and working with SQL for queries, data extraction, transformation and loading.
  • At least 3 years’ programming experience in R, Python and/or JavaScript
  • At least 2 years’ experience conducting research and/or developing reports
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field  
  •  Ability to collaborate effectively and work as part of a team
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
