Editors at Media Nonprofit

The nonprofit news organization WhoWhatWhy is looking for volunteer Editors to handle a range of functions, including: managing the editorial department, overseeing our blog, tracking and supervising special projects, sourcing subject experts, promoting pieces, developing and assigning pitches, and recruiting and guiding writers. You also may be given the opportunity, or asked, to write articles yourself.

A nonprofit that accepts no advertising, WhoWhatWhy is staffed largely with skilled volunteers dedicated to elevating public awareness and fostering a more vigorous democracy.  

Expectations

You will work remotely and on your own schedule, though we require a minimum commitment of 5-8 hours a week.  Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through email.  All staff are required to respond to emails on a daily basis.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as editor in your section
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • A healthy dose of skepticism toward mainstream coverage of current events
  • The ability to manage others and generate incisive, original story ideas
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • An insatiable appetite for news

Responsibilities

  • Guide and manage a group of reporters
  • Review and refine story ideas from team members and readers
  • Edit articles for accuracy and coherence
  • Coordinate with marketing and PR teams to maximize traction for stories
  • Develop and assign pitches to qualified reporters
