Interactive News Designer

The nonprofit news organization WhoWhatWhy is looking for a volunteer Interactive News Designer. You will be responsible for designing templates and conceptualizations that help convey the message and data within WhoWhatWhy articles and help readers access relevant further information.

A nonprofit that accepts no advertising, WhoWhatWhy is staffed largely with skilled volunteers dedicated to elevating public awareness and fostering a more vigorous democracy.  

Expectations

You will work remotely and on your own schedule, though we require a minimum commitment of 5-8 hours a week.  Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through email. All staff are required to respond to emails on a daily basis.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience working with data, template and graphic software
  • Newsroom experience a plus
  • The ability to work in a virtual team environment
  • Some awareness of copyright issues
  • Ability to work independently
  • A creative mindset

​Responsibilities

  • Design interactive templates to complement individual stories
  • Understand which stories require which interpretations of templates, think of further information that could be useful to include with stories, and help readers access the information they need to see the full picture
  • Work well with different team members to satisfy different aspects of news pieces
