Are you an experienced Chief of Staff who is passionate about making a difference? Would you find it exciting to work with smart and talented individuals committed to producing great journalism in the public interest? Can you commit (a minimum of) 15 hours a week to our mission, working remotely on your own schedule with our far-flung, diverse team? 

 

We are seeking a highly experienced chief of staff with an exceptionally friendly, level-headed, and high-achieving personality. Chief of Staff will be managing the day-to-day operations for the CEO, Russ Baker, while working closely with leadership across the organization. Strong candidates are highly motivated, intelligent, and have a reasonably animated personality. Candidates will be able to instill trust, confidence and the desire to perform in others.

We are a nonprofit. We are not funded by a zillionaire. We do not accept corporate ads. As such, we are only currently able to pay a small core team, as well as experienced professional freelancers —  and rely primarily on skilled volunteers to fill out our growing organizational infrastructure. 

 

Age does not matter. We have among us young students, vibrant retirees, and everything in between, from all walks of life.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the CEO and organization leadership to prioritize CEO’s calendar and tasks
  • Assist and communicate with executives in decision-making, program management, and initiative implementation to ensure milestones are established
  • Serve as liaison between staff, executives, senior leaders, and CEO, regarding company climate, employee well-being, project updates, proposals, and planning
  • Implement and manage a CEO staff meeting and senior leadership team’s subcommittee meetings; draft agendas, coordinate presentations, manage attendees, create, and distribute meeting minutes and other work-related engagements
  • Brief the CEO each morning (15 minutes) on his to-do list, meetings, and topics of interest
  • Oversee daily operations through collaboration with senior management and department leaders, performing an array of administrative tasks from managing calendars, generating correspondence, maintaining hard copy and electronic files, planning and coordinating annual corporate meetings, and scheduling facilities
  • Review, design, and execute on improvements to org structure; find knowledge and skills gaps and help address them
  • Track and manage projects and tasks to actively enable the efficiency of business operations from behind the scenes
  • Build and develop relationships with all employees for increased efficiency and effective responsiveness into existing operations, and help to define new operational strategies, working with CEO and executives on special projects

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or similar field
  • 5+ years in a business or executive management role
  • Interest in and knowledge of current affairs and news
  • Consulting experience with a focus on data analysis and operations management
  • Proven success in a project coordination role
  • Nimble business mind with a focus on developing creative solutions
  • Strong project reporting skills, with a focus on interdepartmental communication
  • Proven experience organizing and directing multiple teams and departments
  • Excellent communicator in written and verbal form with exceptional presentation abilities
  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines and to respond to rapidly changing demand
  • Extremely versatile, dedicated to efficient productivity

Expectations 

 

You will be expected to attend your department’s recurring meetings. Beyond this, you will work on your own schedule. We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months for at least 10 hours a week. Because our team is spread throughout the world, we rely on a combination of Slack, email, and conference calls, and expect everyone to be responsive in a timely manner.
